1- JOB DESCRIPTION :
In Canada, midwives are autonomous, regulated primary health care providers offering comprehensive care to low-risk clients and newborns throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the first six weeks postpartum. Working in hospitals, birth centers, or homes, they provide prenatal screenings, clinical exams, and manage deliveries, with authority to prescribe medications, order diagnostics, and transfer care if complications arise.
2- DUTIES :
▪️ Prenatal Care: Providing comprehensive, individualized antenatal care, including physical exams, screening tests, and education.
▪️ Labour and Birth: Monitoring the progress of labour, providing support, and managing low-risk births in hospitals, homes, or birth centers.
▪️ Postpartum Care: Providing care for both the client and the newborn for approximately six weeks following birth, including breastfeeding support.
▪️ Clinical Decision-Making: Acting as the primary decision-maker in care, with the authority to order laboratory tests, ultrasounds, and prescribe specific medications.
▪️ Collaboration: Consulting or transferring care to obstetricians or other specialists when complications arise.
3- REQUIREMENTS :
▪️ Education: Completion of a university, college, or other approved nursing program is required.
▪️ Licensure: Willingness to obtain a Registration with a provincial or territorial regulatory body is mandatory to practice in Canada.
▪️ Skills: Strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
